Frequently Asked Questions
Is there an application fee or membership fees for the curator and artists?
No. Submission is free.
How many artists should be in the exhibit?
A minimum of 2 artists is required. There is no maximum number of artists, however you should not choose more artists than you can reasonably work into the space.
Can the curator/artist include their artwork in their own exhibit?
Yes, the curator may exhibit his or her own work within reason. If you, as the curator, plan on exhibiting your own work, you must explain why it is integral to the concept for your proposed exhibit. Solo exhibition proposals will not be accepted.
What if an artist becomes unavailable to exhibit as planned?
It is important that you consider several alternates when planning your exhibition. Be sure to contact all artists you are considering to confirm their interest and availability in participating in this exhibit if it is chosen. Do this before submitting your proposal.
Can modifications be made to YorkArts’ gallery to accommodate my exhibit plans?
Yes, the gallery space can be modified in any way that causes no permanent damage. In short, you can do anything you can undo in a timely manner. You will be responsible for returning the gallery to its original condition before the installation of our next exhibit begins.
What will YorkArts provide for this exhibit? Is there a budget?
YorkArts provides gallery space, insurance for all artwork while in our possession, promotional postcard sent to our mailing list, public relations outreach, and a catered opening reception as well as our advice, guidance and moral support. In addition to these services, YorkArts will provide up to $150 for shipping costs. Any additional shipping or delivery costs will be the responsibility of the curator and/or artists.
If my proposal is selected for exhibition, what do I do?
Be prepared to actively collaborate and cooperate with YorkArts staff as well as with the artists in your exhibit to plan and promote and execute your exhibit. As curator of this exhibit you will take on many responsibilities including corresponding with your artists, selecting the works, providing a final statement as well as any other relevant materials requested by YorkArts, distributing postcards and press releases to your own contacts, installation and de-installation of your exhibit, and returning the gallery to its original condition in a timely manner. Each curator is asked to plan and execute an enrichment event to accompany his or her exhibition (such as a curator’s talk, panel discussion, reading, performance, educational activity, etc.).
What responsibility will belong to the artists?
Each artist is responsible for coordinating, with the curator, the following tasks: delivering and picking up their work on time and assisting with installation as appropriate, providing digital images of artwork to be exhibited for promotional purposes, bios and resumes for press requests and YorkArts’ exhibition notebook and distributing postcards and press releases to their own contacts.
When is the submission deadline?
All submissions must be postmarked June 15, 2011.
When will the results be announced?
All applicants will be notified on or before July 15, 2011. Do not contact the gallery for results.
What can I do to improve my chances?
Submit your proposal early! Doing so ensures a thorough review of your materials.

Suggestions on Preparing a Solid Proposal
(from nutureart.org)
While there are many things that go into making a great exhibition, three components stand out when evaluating a proposal:
1) The artwork:
Is the work itself strong? Does it work well together? Are there any weak points? One way to ensure strong artwork is too select too many artists and then edit the work down to just the right amount. Always give yourself lots to choose from so as to enable you to narrow things down later according to artist availability or narrowing vision of the show. What would the show be like without a particular artist?
2) The proposal:
Your proposal should be as clear as possible. Avoid using jargon or terminology not required by the ideas involved. Often, it is a good idea to spend a little time talking about your idea in a more general way and then move on to consider artists individually. Your general statement should explain why you are excited about the show and why it is important to have exhibited. Then, two or three sentences on each artist helps to give reasons as to what about their work makes them relevant to the show.
3) The “curatorship” itself:
Often enough, a curator can have a great idea and write well about it and can have some great work chosen, but fail to match the artists to the proposal. Make sure the artists are relevant to your idea and that your statement is relevant to the artists you select!
Additionally, sticking to the guidelines is really important for any submission. If something is done incorrectly (even in an attempt to make it “fancy”), it can lead a jury member to think you are unable to follow simple direction, thus questioning your ability to bring off a successful exhibition. Let the work and your statement speak for itself.
